The Road to Serfdom in Cartoons

The Road to Serfdom is a book written in the 1940s by Friedrich Hayek (recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974). Look Magazine made a comic strip of the book which has been converted to a short film.

Dedicated to "the socialists of all parties", Hayek’s central thesis is that all forms of collectivism lead logically and inevitably to tyranny, and he used the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany as examples of countries which, in his view, had gone down “the road to serfdom” and reached tyranny. Hayek argued that within a centrally planned economic system the distribution and allocation of all resources and goods would devolve onto a small group which would be incapable of processing all the information pertinent to the appropriate distribution of the resources and goods at the central planners’ disposal. Disagreement about the practical implementation of any economic plan combined with the inadequacy of the central planners’ resource management would invariably necessitate coercion in order for anything to be achieved.

Hayek further argued that the failure of central planning would be perceived by the public as an absence of sufficient power by the state to implement an otherwise good idea. Such a perception would lead the public to vote more power to the state, and would assist the rise to power of a “strong man” perceived to be capable of “getting the job done”. After these developments Hayek argued that a country would be ineluctably driven into outright totalitarianism. For Hayek “the road to serfdom” inadvertently set upon by central planning, with its dismantling of the free market system, ends in the destruction of all individual economic and personal freedom.

José Piñera - The Man Who Fought For Prosperity and Democracy in Chile

José Piñera was interviewed March 19, 2005 by Thomas Gur on the Swedish TV programme Global Axess in an episode entitled "The Man Who Fought for Prosperity and Democracy in Chile”.

Dr. Piñera was Chile's Minister of Labor and Social Security (1978-1980). He was responsible for the Social Security Act of 1980 that created a fully funded pension system based on personal retirement accounts, and for the Labor Code of 1979, that re-introduced trade union democracy and decentralized collective bargaining.

Dr. Piñera’s plan gave workers the voluntary choice of opting out of the government run retirement system. Since then 95% of Chilean citizens have opted out of state run social security and the program has been hailed as a massive success. In this presentation, Dr. Piñera shares his rational for supporting such a system, his efforts in implementing it, and the results of his efforts.

The Philosophy of Liberty

When Ron Paul talks about the philosophy of liberty, this is what he means.

The philosophy of liberty is based on self-ownership. This simple but elegant and hard-hitting animation will explain exactly what that means. It's a great tool anyone can use to educate children and adults about our right to life, liberty, and the property we create - and our responsibility to think, speak and act.

The Cure: How Capitalism Can Save American Health Care

We have a socialist-communist system of distributing medical care. Instead of letting people hire their own physicians and pay them, no one pays his or her own medical bills. Instead, there's a third party payment system. It is a communist system and it has a communist result.

Despite this, we've had numerous miracles in medical science. From the discovery of penicillin, to new surgical techniques, to MRIs and CAT scans, the last 30 or 40 years have been a period of miraculous change in medical science.

On the other hand, we've seen costs skyrocket. Nobody is happy: physicians don't like it, patients don't like it. Why? Because none of them are responsible for themselves. You no longer have a situation in which a patient chooses a physician, receives a service, gets charged, and pays for it. There is no direct relation between the patient and the physician. The physician is an employee of an insurance company or an employee of the government. Today, a third party pays the bills. As a result, no one who visits the doctor asks what the charge is going to be—somebody else is going to take care of that. The end result is third party payment and, worst of all, third party treatment."
        - MILTON FRIEDMAN

Some of the nation's top health policy experts gathered in Albany on Sept. 26, 2006 to share ideas on how to curb health care expenses, improve health care services and expand access to health insurance in New York State. Featured topics included innovative Medicaid reforms in Florida and Kentucky, the Massachusetts health insurance reform plan, the pitfalls of a Canada-style universal health plan, and the potential benefits of expanding consumer health care choices.

In this presentation, keynoter David Gratzer, MD Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute Center for Medical Progress and author of "The Cure: How Capitalism Can Save American Health Care" discusses solutions to the ills of the Canadian and American Health Care Systems.

The Great Global Warming Swindle

The Great Global Warming Swindle is a controversial documentary film by British television producer Martin Durkin, which argues against the scientific opinion that human activity is the main cause of global warming. The film showcases scientists, economists, politicians, writers, and others who are skeptical of the scientific consensus on anthropogenic global warming. Publicity for the programme states that global warming is "a lie" and "the biggest scam of modern times."

Channel 4, which screened the documentary on March 8, 2007, described the film as "a polemic that drew together the well-documented views of a number of respected scientists to reach the same conclusions. This is a controversial film but we feel that it is important that all sides of the debate are aired."

The programme's accuracy has been disputed on multiple points and several commentators have criticized it for being one-sided, noting that the mainstream position on global warming is supported by the scientific academies of the major industrialized nations and other scientific organizations. The film disputes the positions of these scientific organizations by interviewing scientists and others, including Richard Lindzen and other contributors to reports by the IPCC, who disagree with explanations that attribute global warming to human activities.
